The demolition of the former Deutsche Bank building went into overdrive this week, as contractor Bovis Lend Lease added a second shift.

Hoping to get the building down by the end of the year, Bovis is now working from 7 a.m. to midnight on weekdays. Previously, the workday ended at 5 p.m.

As a condition of the permit from the city Buildings Dept., Bovis has to stop using cranes and breaking up concrete at sundown but can continue cutting steel and loading steel and other debris into containers until midnight, said the Lower Manhattan Development Corp., which owns the building.

The Deutsche Bank building now stands at about half its original height of 41 stories. Workers will have to take down one floor every two weeks if they hope to make the end-of-2010 goal.
