A two-by-four fell off the American International Group building at 175 Water St. and landed on an apartment terrace at 160 Front St. last Thurs., July 10.
The Department of Buildings issued a stop-work order for the A.I.G. building, where workers were doing waterproofing and brickwork. The piece of wood fell onto the penthouse terrace at 160 Front St., which is a separate level above the seventh floor, said Chris Toriello, the property manager.
The building’s superintendent complained to the D.O.B. after the penthouse tenant heard the crash of the wood onto the terrace, Toriello said.
Carly Sullivan, spokesperson for the Buildings Department, said the D.O.B. lifted the stop-work order Fri., July 11 after the A.I.G. contractor, Brisk Waterproofing, installed more netting around the Water St. building. Sullivan did not know how far the debris fell.
A.I.G. security guards, who did not wish to be named because of company policy, said no one worked on the building on Friday. They said A.I.G.’s property manager, Tim Molloy, was going to resolve the problem on Monday.
Molloy declined to comment.
Falling debris has not been the biggest problem with the 175 Water St. project, several tenants from 160 Front St. said. The tenants did not hear anything hit their building on Thursday, but they have noticed construction at the Water St. building going late into the evening, sometimes until 10 or 11 p.m.
The D.O.B. has received several complaints about illegal after-hours construction at the A.I.G. building, but inspectors have not found any violations.
