Faces of Ellis Island: See clerk Augustus Frederick Sherman’s pictures of immigrants

About 12 million immigrants passed through Ellis Island before it closed on Nov. 12, 1954. Augustus Frederick Sherman got the chance to meet some of them.

Sherman, an Ellis Island clerk from 1892-1925, captured photos of men, women, and children who were processed at Ellis Island on their way to America.

Take a trip back in time through his photos.
