Councilmemembers Alan Gerson and Eva Moskowitz were endorsed in the recent primary election by the League of Humane Voters of New York City, based on their pledge to support legislation to protect animals, including a proposed bill that would ban rodeos in New York City. Animal activists say that bulls, horses and calves used in rodeos are physically provoked into displaying “wild” behavior, by means of spurs and electric prods, often suffering severe injuries, such as broken bones, massive bruising and internal bleeding. Lisa Virgona, vice president of the League of Humane Voters of New York City, said, “Councilmembers Moskowitz… and Gerson will be strong advocates for animal rights who will stand up to the vested interests who profit from cruelty. The victory of these candidates is a victory for animal rights.”
