Zelda, Battery Park’s resident turkey, strutted around her home territory last Friday afternoon, appearing unperturbed by the cold drizzle and the flocks of tourists who stopped to take her picture. Zelda has lived in the park since 2003 and may be nearing the end of her life span, said Pat Kirshner, the Battery Conservancy’s director of operations and planning. At the beginning of the year, Kirshner told us she was beginning to see signs of Zelda’s aging. Asked how Zelda is doing now, Kirshner, replied in an e-mail, “She is just fine. An older and wiser bird than she used to be. She says she is looking forward to Nov. 27.” For readers who don’t keep such a close watch on their calendars, that’s the day after Thanksgiving.
