One less old building on Gov. Island

A former ferry terminal on Governor’s Island will soon be gone. The building, which is now used by Water Taxi Beach, is an unnecessary obstruction to the views of the rest of the island, according to the Trust for Governor’s Island. It also impedes smooth pedestrian traffic flow to and from the Manhattan-bound ferry, the Trust said.

“Park designers feel strongly about this as a welcoming point to a globally important park, and feel that the building creates a real logistical challenge for visitors coming off the ferry,” Claire Kelly, director of capital development for the Trust for Governor’s Island, told Community Board 1’s Landmarks Committee last Tues., July 26.

The committee deemed the building a relic of the past and hoped to see a piece of it preserved.

However, the proposal went before the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission Tues., July 26, which voted unanimously in favor of the building’s demolition and others on the island. “The commissioners said that removing the buildings would open up views of the water and enhance the special character of the district,” said L.P.C. Communications Director Elisabeth de Bourbon.
