Preservationist: Pavilion not that old

Jack Taylor, a preservationist and Union Sq. Park Community Coalition member, submitted a correction on a Nov. 3 article in The Villager that mistakenly dated the Union Sq. Park pavilion to the turn of the 20th century. “The present pavilion was built in 1930 when the entire Union Sq. Park was raised more than 6 feet to accommodate the then new BMT subway line. Like its predecessor structures on the same site since the mid-19th century, the pavilion was designed to be used as a bandstand, a reviewing stand, a rostrum for public speakers and a comfort station and was often also a sheltered play area for children,” Taylor said.
