Small dog run, ‘skate mounds’ in works

Work on the new, small-dogs-only dog run in Washington Sq. Park was planned to start Mon., Oct. 6, and take just a week to complete, reported Aubrey Lees, chairperson of Community Board 2’s Parks Committee and a leading advocate for the run.

Lees said the run is planned to be larger than 600 sq. ft. The location will be to the north of the park’s existing dog run, on the opposite side of the Holley statue. Also, according to Lees, discussion on the renovation of the park’s play mounds has focused on how to make them safe for skateboarders to use. The mounds’ surface won’t be grass but will be something skateboards can roll on and their height will be lower than the existing mounds, which are about six ft. tall.

“Mainly, it’ll be skateboarders who’ll be using it,” Lees said. “It’ll be something receptive to skateboarders.”
