Tulips were being planted in Washington Square Park last week, while farther south, the Hudson Square Connection business improvement district was decking the boughs with BID-emblazoned balls. The BID is putting Christmas trees out along Varick St. over the subway grates. The holiday balls on them are apparently the BID’s second major salvo — following streetlamp flags — to help identify the west-of-Soho area with the BID’s preferred name for it. However, “Hudson Square haters” who refuse to honor the moniker might take solace in the name of the new, 120-room hotel that opened in the neighborhood on Varick St. between King and Charlton Sts. last week — the Courtyard Soho.
