About 500 opponents and 150 supporters of the Park51 Islamic cultural center faced off Sunday in Lower Manhattan on Park Place, near the project’s planned site. The opponents started things off with a motorcycle ride, above, led by some firefighters, according to the New York Post, then rallied around the corner from the proposed site of the 13-story building, which would contain a prayer space, as well as a pool and other amenities. “No clubhouse for terrorists!” the opponents shouted. “Fascists go home!” the supporters retorted. In photo below right, East Villagers Matt Sky and Julia Lundy — who had already made headlines for previously demonstrating at the site on behalf of the project — joined Sunday’s heated give-and-take.
