East Harlem homicide: Young man, 19, dies hours after being shot at public housing complex

A 19-year-old man died hours after being shot at an East Harlem public housing complex, police announced Thursday morning.

Law enforcement sources said Ramon Alvarez, 19, was gunned down at the Thomas Jefferson Houses where he lived, at 205 East 112th St., at about 3:36 a.m. on April 10.

Officers from the 23rd Precinct and NYPD PSA 5, in responding to a 911 call at the location at that time, found Alvarez conscious and alert, with a gunshot wound to his torso.

EMS rushed the victim to Harlem Hospital, but his condition deteriorated, and he died at 5:40 p.m. Wednesday.

As of Thursday morning, police sources did not have information about a possible motive for the shooting, or a description of the suspect involved.

So far, no arrests have been made in the ongoing investigation, police said.

The 23rd Precinct had reported zero homicides year-to-date through April 7, according to the most recent CompStat report. Shootings in the command were also down so far in 2024, from 5 at the same point last year to just one as of April 7.
