Kavanagh Holds Press Conference on ERPO Law

State Senator Brian P. Kavanagh
State Senator Brian P. Kavanagh

State Senator Brian Kavanagh (D-Lower East Side) held a press conference yesterday on New York’s newly passed Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) law.

The law, which goes into effect tomorrow, establishes a process for removing firearms from people who raise “red flags”. In other words, those who are deemed to pose a serious threat to others can have their firearms preemptively confiscated.

“The effectiveness of this law depends on a lot of things,” said Kavanagh. “It depends on the readiness of the courts to process these laws and make these judgments. It depends on the district attorneys, on the school officials, and the police officers who have to implement these laws. And it depends on the general public being aware of the law.”
