Five players from the New York Islanders and the New York Rangers will represent their home countries at the 2025 IIHF World Championships in Stockholm, Sweden, this month.
New York Islanders forward Bo Horvat and defenseman Noah Dobson, and New York Rangers forward Will Cuylle will play for Team Canada at the tournament. The Rangers’ Brett Berard will represent the United States, and Mika Zibanejad will play for Sweden.
Horvat’s selection marks his second career appearance for Canada at the World Championships. He played in the 2018 tournament when he was a member of the Vancouver Canucks, putting up three goals and seven points in 10 games. Horvat has previously represented Canada at the 2014 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships and the 2011 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
Horvat led the Islanders in scoring this season with 28 goals and 57 points in 81 games.
Dobson is making his first appearance in the World Championships. He previously represented Canada at the 2019 World Juniors and the 2016 U-17 Challenge.
Dobson was the Islanders’ top-scoring defenseman this season. In 71 games, he put up 10 goals and 39 points.
Cuylle is also making his first World Championship appearance, having previously played for Team Canada in the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup and the 2022 World Juniors. He ranked sixth on the Rangers in scoring this season with 20 goals and 45 points.
For the United States, Berard was among five players added to the roster Thursday. He previously represented the U.S. at the 2017 U-17 Challenge and the 2021 and 2022 World Juniors. Berard appeared in 35 games with the Rangers this season, tallying six goals and 10 points.
Zibanejad will represent Sweden at the World Championships for the second time in his career. He was a member of the 2018 squad that won gold at the tournament. He previously played in the 2010 U-17 Challenge, 2018 World U18 Championship, 2012 World Juniors — where he scored the tournament-winning goal in overtime — and the 4 Nations Face-Off in February.
Zibanejad is coming off a relatively disappointing 2024–25 campaign in which he put up 20 goals and 62 points in 82 games.
The tournament will run from May 9 to May 25.
