Somehow, after being swept by the Atlanta Braves in which they blew leads in three consecutive games, things have managed to get worse for the Mets as Pete Alonso is headed to the injured list.
As first reported by Mike Mayer of Metsmerized on Friday morning that he’d be going on the IL, Alonso suffered the injury during the middle game of New York’s in Atlanta on Wednesday when he was hit in the left wrist by a Charlie Morton 97-mph fastball. He was immediately lifted from the game where initial x-rays came back negative. The Mets diagnosed it as a contusion and labeled him as day-to-day.
However, concern grew when manager Buck Showalter said on Thursday night that he was being sent back to New York for further testing before Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that there was “real concern” that Alonso not only could Alonso land on the IL, but he could miss multiple weeks.
It’s another blow to a sputtering Mets team that, despite high expectations coming into this season, fell to three games under .500 after being swept by Atlanta. Alonso had been the Mets’ most important piece in keeping them afloat throughout the tumultuous spring, leading the majors with 22 home runs and 49 RBI.
Mark Vientos, who started in Alonso’s place on Thursday night, should see a bump in playing time after being used sporadically by Showalter in the three weeks since he was promoted from Triple-A.
