The kids at P.S. 234 may not get an ear fill after all. The developers of Site 5C, the residential project now underway at the adjoining vacant lot, have hammered out a deal with City Councilmember Alan Gerson and school officials that will keep the noise under wraps. The site is adjacent to the school’s back yard and an adjacent dog run, which will remain open during most of the construction. “I am pleased to report that the developers are working with us on reducing noise and air pollution,” P.S. 234 Principal Sandy Bridges wrote in a recent letter to parents. Plaza Construction, the construction company on site, will enlist vehicles that use low sulfur fuel and are retrofitted with exhaust filters, which minimize air pollution. The developers will also use variable frequency hammers, which use vibrations, instead of driving wooden piles into the ground. Developers Jack Resnick and Sons have agreed to standards that exceed legal requirements, said Gerson in a telephone interview. The noise, which has already begun, does not appear to be a problem, according to Bridges. “All is apparently quiet on our Western Front,” the principal signed off.
