In the Greenwich Village Little League Major’s A Division playoffs, the Astros were the surprise winners. The Astros had a below .500 season this year and therefore went into the playoffs as an underdog. They lost their first game to the Brewers on Friday evening June 18 and had to win four straight to take the championship, an almost impossible feat. That Sunday the Astros defeated the first-place Cardinals 3-2 and then played the Brewers again a week later on Friday evening defeating them 2-1. This set the stage for a doubleheader showdown the next day against the Dodgers, another underdog that had risen to the occasion and won the first two games against the two top teams. But the Astros were on a roll and defeated the Dodgers in a hard-fought extra-innings game 4-3, and immediately played the second game and won 9-7 to take the playoff championship. They had won four in a row and three games in less than 24 hours in the sweltering heat.
