Norman Lear is also interested in young people, including downtowners.

He’s bringing one of the very few original copies of the Declaration of Independence to our neighborhood, including an all-day showing at PS 234.

Downtown is just one stop of a 51-city road tour. Beginning in July, 2001, Lear launched the cross-country trek for the famous document. Not content to leave things there, on Sept. 11, 2002, he launched the “Declare Yourself Campaign,” bringing the legendary script to college campuses to encourage young people to register to vote. Students were able to register on the spot.

Accompanying the document on the college tour has been a cast of professional spoken-word artists. The idea is to inspire young people in the same way the founding fathers did 225 years ago when they recited the Declaration of Independence aloud to a nervous populace. Performing original scripts, their message will be about activism, voting, democracy and the empowerment of a new generation.

And they are coming to Downtown.
