In our UnderCover item last week about a debate involving John Chromczak, the Republican candidate for State Senate in Lower Manhattan, we referred incorrectly to his position on abortion (UnderCover Oct. 10 – 16, “Debate”). Although Chromczak personally opposes abortions he does not want to make them all illegal, as we implied. He supports keeping New York State law as is for most abortions but he would support bans on late-term abortions, commonly referred to as “partial birth abortions.” He also favors requiring parental notification by minors before they had an abortion, or in cases where there is a risk of abuse, he would allow judicial notification instead.
Chromczak’s campaign manger, Allie Nigolian, said even if Roe v. Wade — the U.S. Supreme Court decision that established a woman’s right to have an abortion — were overturned, Chromczak would still not vote for a bill to make all abortions illegal.
