Fire envelops Kips Bay building at 203 East 26th St.

A small commercial building in Kips Bay was enveloped in flames Thursday, snarling traffic as 25 units of the FDNY — 106 firefighters and EMS personnel — responded to the two-alarm blaze. Firefighters extinguished the fire within 45 minutes.

The first alarm of fire at the two-story brick building at 203 East 26th St. was sounded at 2:47 p.m.; the fire was extinguished by 3:28 p.m.

“Part of it (the fire) was on the roof: We don’t know where it started,” said a spokesman for the FDNY. The cause of the blaze is under investigation, said the spokesman.
