Eliana Gutman, right, participated in the Healing Heart Project by wearing a red heart pin in Washington Sq. Park last Saturday. Tribeca artist June Aherns, above, who created the project, distributed handmade hearts made by individuals from around the world, each heart representing the creator’s wish for hope and peace. Following Sept. 11, 2001, Ahrens collected over 3,000 handmade hearts in memory of those who perished on 9/11. She previously used the hearts to create two, 13-ft. circles in Washington Sq. Park to symbolize the twin towers. She decided to hand them out to continue the project as a “living memorial.”
