Centenarian Gayle honored at The Century Association

Margot Gayle, a leader in the efforts to save the Jefferson Market Courthouse at Sixth Ave. and W. 10th St., celebrated her 100th birthday on May 14 with fellow preservation advocates gathered in her honor at The Century Association on W. 43rd St. The event was organized by the Metropolitan Chapter of the Victorian Society in America. Gayle was one of the original founders of V.S.A. in 1966. As a resident of the Village in the 1960s, she was one of the original advocates for saving the Jefferson Market Courthouse, its clock tower and bell. In 1970 she founded Friends of Cast-Iron Architecture and worked to gain designation of the Soho Cast-Iron Historic District.
