An art project planned for Duane Park will feature neon tubing that would glow brightly among the bare tree limbs.
Currently the project, entitled the “Art of Trees,” by Monika Goetz, is set to be up for six to eight weeks in January or February 2007.
At Community Board 1’s Arts and Entertainment Task Force meeting Thursday the committee approved the project for Duane Park with four votes for and one abstention.
The neon tubing would be attached to the trees through an intricate network of cables that would not damage the trees, and it would be shut off late at night to minimize light pollution in homes.
Edward Mocsi from Art of Trees, said the Duane Park installation is part of an initiative that was started in Geneva and invites landscape architects to decorate trees in a non-traditional manner.
Mocsi assured C.B. 1 that no harm would come to Duane Park, located at Duane and Hudson Sts. The neon would face Hudson St. and be encased in plastic tubing, in case of breakage. All of the work would be done from a cherry picker on Hudson St.
The committee recommended approving the project on the condition that the Parks Department and the Friends of Duane Park approve it.
