Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver tested out a brand-new electric-car charging station at Seward Park Co-op, on Grand St., earlier this month. The co-op is one of the first apartment complexes in the country to join the Charge Point America Program, a national electric vehicle initiative sponsored by $15 million in federal stimulus funds.
Seward Park Co-op tenants and neighborhood residents who purchase an electric vehicle can charge it at the station. People can also can sign up with Connect by Hertz’s car-sharing club, which allows them to rent the Seward Park Co-op’s Nissan Leaf electric car by the hour.
Local politicians, along with Michael Tumminia, former president and current board member of Seward Park Co-op, celebrated the introduction of the residence’s program, nicknamed the “Plugged-In Initiative,” at an unveiling ceremony on May 6.
“This car-sharing hub puts our Lower East Side on the vanguard of New York’s efforts to promote renewable, sustainable energy,” said Silver, who recently drove an electric vehicle for the first time during a visit to Israel.
