Police have beefed up patrols in West Chelsea in response to the July 25 murder of Jennifer Moore, a New Jersey teenager who was last seen drinking at Guest House, a club at 542 W. 27th St.

“We have 18 new Police Academy graduates and most of them are on the club patrol,” said Captain Stephen Hughes, 10th Precinct commander. In the four days of Aug. 3-6 there were 11 arrests in the area between 24th and 29th Sts. between 10th and 11th Aves. mostly for drug possession and disorderly conduct. Anthony Bologna, 52, who as captain became commanding officer of the First Precinct a little over a year ago, was promoted on Aug. 1 to the rank of deputy inspector. The First Precinct covers Lower Manhattan, Soho, Hudson Square and the South Village.

“It’s not likely to mean a change of assignment,” he said. “I expect to be here for two years or more. It’s a step up, a little more clout, I guess, and it feels good,” he added. A police officer for 24 years, he first served on the Lower East Side, went to Brooklyn as a sergeant and was promoted to lieutenant in 1996, serving as a detective in Washington Heights where he led a squad that solved more than 20 homicides in 1997 and 1998.

Promoted to captain in October 1998, Bologna went to the Manhattan South Borough Command where in 2001 he led the Manhattan South Task Force, which responds to demonstrations and other special situations.
