The No. 1 subway will not run south of 14th St. the next three weekends because of work at the World Trade Center site. The No. 2 and 3 trains will take straphangers from 14th St. to Chambers St., and then shuttle buses will make the rest of the No. 1 stops to South Ferry. Additionally, the 2 and 3 will run local over the weekend from 96th St. to Chambers St., while the 1 train will run express for one stop between 34th St. and 14th St., skipping 18th St., 23rd St. and 28th St. The changes will go into effect Fri., March 26 at 11:30 p.m. and run until 5 a.m. Mon., March 29. The same changes will repeat the weekends of April 2-5 and April 9-12.
Steve Coleman, spokesperson for the Port Authority, expects additional outages on the No. 1 line on weekends and possibly late nights later in the year. The No. 1 train runs directly through the W.T.C. and the Port is rebuilding the supports beneath it. Originally, that work was slated to close the No. 1 line south of Chambers St. entirely for six weeks in the summer of 2010, but Coleman said the Port and Metropolitan Transportation Authority found a way to keep the subway running generally with some closures.
