Teens charged in attack on couple in Central Park

A 17-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl were charged Tuesday with attacking a young man and his girlfriend with a Taser in Central Park earlier this month, police said.

The teen, Jeffrey Valdez of Pleasantville, New York, was charged with two counts of second-degree robbery, two counts of second-degree menacing, and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. The girl was charged as a minor with a slew of offenses, including first-degree robbery.

The pair is accused of attacking a 20-year-old man and his 17-year-old girlfriend near Hecksher Playground inside the park at about 9:30 p.m. on May 9.

The girl, who was part of a group of about 15 teens, apparently got into an argument with the female victim, police said. The suspects then produced a Taser, punched the girl, and grabbed her purse. They took her iPhone out and ran, police said.

Valdez was awaiting arraignment Tuesday and could not be reached for comment.
