Taste of Chinatown

“Taste of Chinatown 2005” will take place on Saturday, April 23. Over 50 restaurants, bakeries, tea houses and specialty shops in Chinatown will offer $1.00 tasting stations from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Tasting stations will be spread across the neighborhood, on Mott, Mulberry, Baxter, Bayard, Doyers, Pell and Mosco Sts. There will be dishes from Canton, Shanghai, Beijing, Taiwan and Hong Kong, as well as delicacies from Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore and Japan.

Tasters will be able to compare over a dozen different types of noodles, from homemade egg to flat rice, sautéed with ingredients of their choosing. Or, they can spend the afternoon hunting for the perfect dumpling by going on a whirlwind dim sum tour of Chinatown. Apart from the usual favorites like noodles and dumplings, visitors can try more unusual dishes like vegetarian snails and meatball congee.

The tasting extravaganza starts at Baxter St., which will cater to all the noodle lovers. Mulberry St. will offer dishes like Japanese seaweed salad, Peking duck and freshly baked pastries. A turn onto Bayard St. will lead to beef jerky, tiny buns, shrimp balls and mango cheesecake.

Dim sum aficionados should walk over to Pell St., which will also offer vegetarian noodle and rice dishes. On the historic Doyers St., tasters will find the oldest tea parlor in Chinatown which offers its famous almond cookies. Its equally enticing neighbor serves grilled beef and papaya, and some refreshing mango green tea.

Taste of Chinatown even has a special lion dance planned that will move all along the tasting corridor.
