‘Tribute in Light’ to move

Sometimes you have to move further away to put things in better perspective.

This year’s Sept. 11 “Tribute in Light” installation of twin beams of light will appear to be closer to the skyline position of the Twin Towers even though the lights will be further away from the World Trade Center site, said Frank Sanchis, the Municipal Art Society’s senior vice president. The lights, which the society owns, will emanate from the top of the Battery Maritime Garage at West and Morris Sts. for at least the next few Sept. 11’s starting this year.

Since they were first beamed on the sixth-month anniversary of the attack, the lights have been across from the Regal Cinemas at Battery Park City’s Site 26, which is northwest of the tower footprints. The new spot is due south. “If you’re looking from upper Manhattan, they’ll be in the same alignment,” Sanchis said. He said Battery Park will also be a good viewing place.

Skyline accuracy wasn’t the reason for the move though. The state and city started searching for a new locale back when it looked like Goldman Sachs would build its headquarters at Site 26. Goldman backed out of the deal earlier this year, but officials are hoping to convince the firm to reconsider.
