BRONX — The Yankees weren’t playing the Oakland Athletics anymore on Thursday and it showed.

The Rays put up eight runs over four innings as the Yanks’ dropped the series opener against Tampa 8-2. New York starter Domingo Germán held the Rays to just one run through the first five innings before the visitors opened the game up after he was taken out during the top of the sixth.

Yankee manager Aaron Boone turned to the bullpen with two outs in the top of the sixth, handing the ball over to Ron Marinaccio with only a runner on first and Germán having only thrown 87 pitches. The Rays proceeded to pour on the runs, scoring three in the sixth, one in the seventh and three more in the eighth inning.

It was the second consecutive start by Germán that the Yankees’ manager had pulled him from the game in the middle of an inning with two outs already secured and where the bullpen let things get out of control.

The Yankees’ offense was mostly silent on Thursday night as they mustered two hits through eight innings before finally tacking on two more in the bottom of the ninth. New York had scored at least seven runs in four straight games before the loss, which included last Sunday’s defeat at Tropicana Field.

“That stings. I know how hard (Germán) works,” Aaron Judge said about the Yanks’ offense coming up short with Germán on the mound. “The preparation he puts in and to keep an offense like that off balance for a while man, that’s all we’re asking for as an offense. To get a couple of zeros for us and let us go to work. You know when we waste an outing like that for Domingo, it’s tough but we’ll pick it up next time.”

The Yanks’ only hits through most of the game came from Jake Bauers, who had a single to right in the bottom of the second inning and another line drive to right in the bottom of the fifth. Willie Calhoun had New York’s third hit of the game to kick off the ninth off a double that hit off the left-field wall.

Gleyber Torres hit a single that drove in the Yankees’ only two runs of the game.

Germán pitched 5.2 innings and allowed one earned run on three hits while striking out three. Rays starter Drew Rasmussen threw 7.0 innings and extended his scoreless inning streak against the Yankees to 21.0.

“Especially as well as Domingo pitched and we’re right there. just not able to mount much offensively. But you know, it’s also over with now. We got an important one with our ace going tomorrow. We gotta go get it,” manager Aaron Boone said about the loss.

The Rays opened up the scoring in the top of the fifth when Yandy Diaz doubled to drive Josh Lowe home. Tampa really turned up0 the heat after Marinaccio came into the game in the sixth.

After giving up a single and hitting a batter, Lowe doubled on a hard-hit ball to center field that drove in three runs and extended their hold on the game to 4-0.

Things only got worse in the next inning when Albert Abreu gave up a double to Taylor Walls that drove in the fifth run.

Manuel Margot singled to start the eighth and Low hit a two-run homer in the next at-bat to make it a 7-0 game. Isaac Parede doubled to right field to drive in one final run for the Rays.
