Anne Hathaway, Rihanna and other stars have joined the previously named Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett in Warner Bros.’ all-female spinoff of the “Ocean’s Eleven” caper-movie franchise.
They and Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling and the Asian-American rapper and actress Awkwafina, aka Nora Lum, would start shooting in New York in October, Deadline.com reported Wednesday. One additional actress will round out the starring cast for what Deadline called “Ocean’s 8” and The Hollywood Reporter Wednesday said would be titled “Oceans Ocho,” with the Spanish word for eight and no apostrophe.
Steven Soderbergh, director of the 2001-07 “Ocean’s Eleven” trilogy, will produce, with “The Hunger Games” and “Seabiscuit” filmmaker Gary Ross directing and, with Olivia Milch, co-writing the screenplay.
The franchise, which has grossed $1.124 billion at the global box office, is based on the 1960 film “Ocean’s 11,” starring Frank Sinatra as Danny Ocean, who assembles his old war buddies to pull off a Las Vegas heist. The remake and its sequels starred George Clooney in the title role.
