Praise Columbus and pass the pasta
Highlighting the final weekend of Sorrento Cheese Summer in Little Italy was the Columbus Day Weekend Parade on Mulberry St. on Saturday at which singer Vic Damone, top right, was grand marshal. There was also a life-size bust of explorer Columbus carved from Parmesan on a float, as well as brass bands. Then, on Monday, the world’s most dominant competitive eaters faced off at Paesano’s on Mulberry St. in a pasta-eating contest. In the heat of the moment, more than a few of the competitive consumers flung aside forks and dug in with their bare hands — or “their God-given forks,” as the emcee put it. In the end, Eddie “Cookie” Jarvis, left, won by eating 6 2/3 pounds of linguini marinara in 10 minutes.
