Before hotel, a hole

A section of pavement on the east side of Third Ave. between Fifth and Sixth Sts. collapsed about 5 feet below the sidewalk level on early Monday afternoon. The sidewalk is in front of a development site, where a building that had a pizza parlor on the ground floor has been demolished to make way for a new hotel project. The cave-in apparently occurred over a spot where there was a vault beneath the sidewalk.
