British don’t go ape for banana art

Warren Allen Smith, a Jane St. resident, calls our attention to Doug Fishbone, 33, a fellow Jane Streeter currently studying art in London, who piled 30,000 bananas in Trafalgar Sq. on Oct. 5 in what Fishbone called art that “works on a multisensual level.” The bananas were dumped at 5 a.m. and by 3 p.m. passersby had eaten many. British newspapers were amused if not outraged. Unclaimed bananas were given to soup kitchens and homeless charities. Fishbone, a conceptual artist, previously displayed his banana pile in Ecuador, Costa Rica, Poland and DUMBO in Brooklyn, Smith said.
