Dog run reopening is set fur this May

The Tompkins Square Park dog run is currently undergoing a $350,000 renovation, $30,000 of which was funded privately by the dog run group.

Cristina DeLuca, a Parks Department spokesperson, said, “We have begun construction and expect it to be completed by May of 2008. Features of the run include new surfacing, new perimeter gardens, new picnic tables and benches, new steel picket fencing to replace the existing chain-link fence and new entrance corrals. We are also using recycled plastic lumber cribbing around the steel picket fences, which will help retain the dog run surfacing and protect tree roots.

“In terms of dog urine harming trees in the run,” DeLuca added, “we are putting steel picket fencing and tree wells with mulch and soil around each tree in order to protect them from people and circling from dogs.”
