ART DEFINING ALPHABET CITY Alphabet City runs from Avenue A to Avenue D between Houston Street and 14th Street. In the 1840s, the area was known as Little Germany and then became home to Eastern European, Irish and Jewish immigrants in the 1880s. Thousands of Puerto Ricans arrived in the latter part of the 20th century and the area became known as Loisaida. In the 1970s, slums arose due to the influx of drug dealers and struggling artists. Today the area is emerging as an area of affluence and the art exhibit “Alphabet City: Everything From A-Z” will feature works by artists with ties to Alphabet City exploring and celebrating these changes.
