Jan Hodenfield, editor of the Downtown Express from 1990 to 1993, died in his Brooklyn home on Thurs., June 21, after a brief illness, at the age of 74.
Glenn Thrush, a senior White House reporter for politico.com who worked for the Downtown Express in the early ‘90s, said, “He was simply the best editor any of us ever had.”
Known as a demanding editor and an enterprising reporter, Hodenfield worked at Rolling Stone in the 1960s and joined the New York Post in 1971 as a rock music columnist.
He left the Post in 1978 to freelance write and edit for popular culture magazines in the U.S. and Europe.
Hodenfield’s daughter Hallie, his son Tor and their mother Lynn Hodenfield survive him, as do his brothers Tim, K.C. and Chris.
