EXHIBITIONS

SUMMER SWIMMING & SUNNING The narrative figurative paintings of Helaine Soller, like “Green Tube” seen above, are on display at Jefferson Market Library from August 4-26. Soller’s work “explores implied relationships between figures as time-bytes of seemingly naturally choreographed moments.” Soller’s tenth solo exhibition, this show continues her work’s evocation of social commentary and humor as well as a sense of place. The Library is located at 425 Avenue of the Americas at Tenth Street and can be reached by calling 212-242-5233. Their summer hours are Monday and Wednesday from noon to 8 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday from noon until 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 to 5 p.m.

THE NIGHT CAPTURED “Enchanted Evening,” a group exhibition at Yancey Richardson Gallery through August 22, contains photographs that revolve around the theme of the night. “California,” a picture above by Elliott Erwitt from 1955, brings forth feelings of those summer evenings past, present & future. The gallery is located at 535 West 22nd St. and can be reached by calling 646-230-9610.

CREEP THROUGH THE ABODE “Home,” a group show now being exhibited through August 15 at Ricco Maresca Gallery, brings together artists who share (in an odd way) warped perceptions of the place we all hold dear. “Maxine,” a painting by Andrea Stern above, brings to mind either a crime scene or a moment of complete exhaustion. Each artist brings to the fold a different perspective, somewhat relating to the idea that “home is about knowing what we can live with and also what we can live without.” The Gallery is located at 529 West 20th Street on the third floor and can be reached by calling 212-627-4819.

ATTEMPTING THE PERFECT CIRCLE Several artists have been selected by George Billis Gallery, located at 511 West 25th Street, to participate in “Round” their summer show featuring all things circular. The piece above by gallery artist Tom Gregg, entitled “Pacifiers,” shows that this show will be everything a Summer show should be; playful, fun and full of surprises. The Gallery is open Monday through Friday from noon until 5 p.m. and can be reached by calling 212-645-2621. “Round,” can be seen from July 21 until August 15.

SUPPORTING THE HEROES The New York City Fire Museum, seen above and located at 278 Spring Street, is currently showing classic firefighting equipment and art related to the job these brave people do every day. Also being shown are numerous exhibits related to September 11 and the great loss the Fire Department suffered that day. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission to the museum is $1-$4. For more information, call 212-691-1303.

DRAWING LIFE WHERE THERE IS NONE The Tarot card drawings of Catya Plate, featuring the anthropomorphism of clothespins, can be seen through Aug. 2 at Art Resources Transfer.
