If you’re looking for a way to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of John F. Kennedy through Dec. 1, the New York Public Library has you covered.
In “Dearest Jackie: On The Death of JFK,” the library presents a selection of photographs, prints and letters from its collection that depict the nation’s grief following the assassination on Nov. 22, 1963.
These include an emotional photograph of Jackie Kennedy at her husband’s funeral taken by Elliott Erwitt; one of the 14 pop-art prints in artist Andy Warhol’s “Flash — Nov. 22, 1963” series, which incorporated newspaper and television images from coverage of the assassination; “Raw,” a lithograph by Robert Rauschenberg that includes a picture of the president; and a letter of condolence to the first lady from presidential aide Arthur Schlesinger that begins, “Dearest Jackie.”
In addition to its display, the library is also encouraging people to share their own memories of the tragic day online at its Facebook page, facebook.com/nypl.
“Dearest Jackie: On The Death of JFK” runs at the New York Public Library’s Stephen A. Schwarzman Building on Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street in the third floor McGraw Rotunda. It is free and the library is open every day but Sunday. For more, visit nypl.org.
