Penn South celebrates 20 years of NORC

The 13-building Penn South complex in Chelsea will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its Program for Seniors with an all-day event Sept. 17 on W. 26th St. between Eighth and Ninth Aves.

Beginning at 10 a.m. the event will feature a panel discussion and workshop in the community room of Building 8 at Eighth Ave. and 27th St., followed by a free lunch at 1 p.m. outdoors on W. 26th St.

Public officials will pay tribute beginning at 2 p.m. to the program that began in 1986 when Penn South was designated a Naturally Occurring Retirement Community, or NORC.

Governor Pataki, Mayor Bloomberg, U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn will send representatives. Congressmember Jerrold Nadler, Assemblymember Richard Gottfried, State Senator Tom Duane, Borough President Scott Stringer and possibly U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer will attend.
