Transit Sam, Week of Jan. 1, 2015

Thurs., Jan. 1 – Wed., Jan. 7    |  ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING RULES ARE SUSPENDED THURSDAY FOR NEW YEAR’S   Happy New Year, Lower Manhattanites! Here’s the deal with parking rules on New Year’s Day: alternate side parking is suspended, meters are suspended, and all signs without the word “Anytime” are suspended.

Public schools are back in session Monday and the holiday season is coming to a close, so any brief respite on the morning commute will soon be over.

In the Holland Tunnel, one New York-bound lane and one New Jersey-bound lane will be closed 11 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday. Expect extra traffic on Canal and Varick Sts.

Construction on Broadway from Maiden Ln. to John St. will make for slowdowns 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

If you’re planning to use the Brooklyn Bridge, remember, good news: closures are taking a break for the holidays and the bridge will be completely open through Sunday, Jan. 4. Closures return Monday through next Thursday, and all Manhattan-bound lanes close 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Inbound traffic will be detoured to the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges and the Battery Tunnel, so watch out for extra traffic on Canal, Delancey, and West Sts.

From the mailbag:

Dear Transit Sam,
If I get a ticket in New Jersey, do the points show up on my New York license for my insurance to find out and raise rates?
Sean, East Village

 Dear Sean,
Just pay the fine, and the ticket will not affect your insurance rates. The N.Y.S. D.M.V. does not record out-of-state parking or moving violations committed by N.Y.S. drivers in other states, unless your violation is alcohol-related or drug-related. However, you must respond to your ticket (or pay your fine), because failure to do so will result in the D.M.V. suspending your N.Y.S. driver license until you respond to the ticket or pay the fine.
