The Downtown Bohos from A Gathering of the Tribes went Uptown to the new Exit Art space on 10th Ave. in West Midtown to celebrate the release of Tribes magazine’s 11th issue. Publisher Steve Cannon, still kickin’ at 70 and pictured at right with poet Jushi, presided over the festivities, which included readings by sound poet Julie Patton, below right, and Bruce Weber, who runs the poetry scene at ABC No Rio. Cannon, who is blind, has been publishing Tribes out of his home/gallery on E. Third St. since 1991. He conceived it as a gathering place for the “East Village Diaspora — a way to give voice to all the artists who have emerged or passed through here.” The new issue features words and works by Sapphire, Faith Ringgold, Yictove, Lara Stapleton, Hal Sirowitz and Bill T. As the party was going on, Tribes associate editor Amy Ouzoonian, below, showed off her anthology “In the Arms of Words: Poems for Disaster Relief,” published to raise money for victims of the tsunami and Hurricane Katrina.
