Virginia Pfeiffer: Bike share will sock it to MTA riders

To The Editor:
Much of the talk about bike shares is as an alternative to automobile traffic but in Manhattan bike shares will really be an alternative to subway and bus travel. People in Manhattan don’t drive to the places that can be reached by bike in 30 minutes since there’s unlikely to be parking at the other end. So, if the bike share succeeds, it will be at the expense of our public transportation. Lower bus and subway ridership will lead to higher fares, lower quality of service and lower maintenance. It may be a boon for those people in excellent physical shape, but for most of us it will make transportation more difficult and expensive.
