Washington Square News wins Pacemaker

For the first time, the Washington Square News, New York University’s student newspaper, has won the prestigious Pacemaker award, placing it among the top 25 college newspapers in the country.

Considered “the Pulitzer for college journalism,” the prize was awarded last weekend by the Associated Collegiate Press and is considered the highest honor in college journalism. Papers are judged on overall quality, from writing and reporting to photography and design. W.S.N. received the Pacemaker for its work during the 2003-’04 academic year.

The Pacemaker winners were chosen from 60 finalists selected in September.

Among the other papers honored with the top prize were The Harvard Crimson, The Daily Pennsylvanian of the University of Pennsylvania, and the Daily Bruin of the University of California at Los Angeles.

In January, W.S.N. was named the No. 1 college daily newspaper in New York state by the New York Press Association.
