Amae Health, a mental health care provider with clinics across the country, has brought its treatment model to NYC — putting multiple services under one roof to help care for patients with severe mental illness.

The provider’s first Big Apple clinic, which opened in October at 207 East 94th St. in Manhattan, combines psychiatric care, primary health care, therapy and social work treatment in one location.

According to Stas Sokolin, chief executive officer of Amae Health, a one-stop set-up such as this, along with a holistic approach to care, “significantly improves” patient outcomes.

The San Francisco-based company partnered with the NewYork-Presbyterian healthcare system to launch its NYC location.

“At Amae Health, we are committed to transforming the treatment of severe mental illness by delivering comprehensive, compassionate, and outcomes-driven whole-person care,” Sokolin said. “We are thrilled to collaborate with NewYork-Presbyterian to enhance mental health care. Together, we can increase access to mental, physical, and social health resources for individuals with severe mental illness and help them lead stable, fulfilling lives.”

Philip J. Wilner, MD, senior vice president for behavioral health and chief operating officer of NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester Behavioral Health, said the clinic offers a “seamless transition into comprehensive outpatient care.”

Although the clinic partners with NewYork-Presbyterian, patients from all over the city can use the clinic.

A team of mental health experts, including psychiatrists, primary care providers, therapists, community health workers and even dieticians, work together at the site to address patients’ needs, including personal goals and finding work.

Although the Journal of the American Medical Association – Psychiatry reports that 23% of patients with severe mental illness are readmitted to hospitals within 30 days of discharge, Amae staff has a much lower rate for their patients.

The clinic — which accepts various insurance providers, including Medicaid and Medicare — reports that its readmission rate is less than 4%, which it says can be attributed to an “integrated” approach to treatment.

“Our notably low rehospitalization rate is driven by a combination of our talented clinical teams, our innovative care model, a hospitality-focused clinic experience, and the strategic use of technology,” Sokolin said. “We take a precision medicine approach, tailoring care to each individual’s unique needs and life circumstances versus relying on a one-size-fits-all model. Our integrated care team treats the whole person, not just their diagnosis, building trust and continuity that keeps patients engaged and committed to recovery.”

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, an estimated 15.4 million adults ages 18 or older live with severe mental illness in the United States, with young adults having the highest prevalence of it at 11.6% of that total.
