Designer Donna Karan and her family unveiled her late husband artist Stephan Weiss’s “The Apple” at a star-studded event in Hudson River Park in the Millennium Garden at Charles St. on Thursday. Placed in the center of the garden’s spiral path, “The Apple” was part of Weiss’s final “Larger Than Life” group of sculptures, a collection of over-scaled bronzed objects including a roll of film and a high-heeled shoe. The pieces were in various stages of completion at his death and were completed posthumously by his son. June 10 marked the third anniversary of Weiss’s passing. Nine ft. tall and weighing 3 tons, “The Apple” sits on top of a circular bronze bench supported by apple cores, inviting people to sit down and enjoy. The sculpture is on loan to the Hudson River Park Trust. Connie Fishman, the Trust’s president, said if it gets a good reaction the sculpture could become permanent.
