After having failed to reach a consensus for a candidate in their previous presidential endorsement vote, last Thursday the Village Independent Democrats resoundingly voted to support Massachusetts Senator John Kerry.
Of 50 members voting, 41 were for Kerry, four for former Vermont Governor Howard Dean, four for Ohio Congressmember Dennis Kucinich and one for South Carolina Senator John Edwards.
Before the vote, Assemblymember Deborah Glick spoke for Kerry.
“We are facing the most serious challenge of our lifetime,” Glick said. “There is an illegitimate president who stole the election. We have to get him out!”
Regarding Bush’s failure to live up to his promises on education, she said, “We’ve got to get rid of the ‘C’ student and put in the ‘A’ student.
“These people we are up against are mean, ruthless and loaded,” the Village assemblymember warned.
Glick said Kerry’s record is excellent on the environment and the education and that he was one of only 14 senators to vote against the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which bans gay marriage, doing so in a year when he was running for reelection.
Noting she hadn’t endorsed until that weekend, she said, “I am supporting John Kerry with a very clear head and a very clear heart.”
The results were announced by John Kerry’s sister, Peggy Kerry, a former Democratic state committeewoman from the Village, and Chad Marlow, the club’s president.
Asked afterwards by The Villager what he thought of the story, first reported by conservative Internet journalist, Matt Drudge, about Kerry’s alleged affair with a young journalist, Marlow said it smacked of a Bush administration plant.
“It strikes me as exactly the kind of thing that Karl Rove would leak,” Marlow said.
