Former Mets general manager Omar Minaya is joining the crosstown Yankees as an advisor to the baseball operations department, as first reported by YES Network’s Jack Curry on Thursday.
It’s the second advisory hire the Yankees made this week, reuniting with long-time San Francisco Giants executive Brian Sabean, who began his career in the Bronx.

The 64-year-old has spent the majority of the last three decades with the Mets, taking a brief hiatus to be the general manager of the Montreal Expos from 2002-2004 — putting together some of the hammer blows that sealed the franchises fate in Canada and ultimately led to its relocation to Washington, D.C. to become the Nationals. Most notably the trading of Cliff Lee, Brandon Phillips, and Grady Sizemore to Cleveland for a half-season of Bartolo Colon.
He re-joined the Mets as general manager in 2005 where he would stay for six inconsistent seasons before his dismissal in 2010. In 2017, he returned as an advisor to Sandy Alderson but was let go just hours after Steve Cohen took over the team as owner in 2020.
Minaya spent the 2022 season working for Major League Baseball as a consultant for amateur scouting initiatives.
Alongside Sabean, Minaya will provide insight into scouting and talent evaluation to help provide more of an old-school mix to a front office that has invested heavily in analytics.
