Oh My! Takei's musical 'Allegiance' beaming to Broadway this fall

The long-in-development new musical "Allegiance," which features George Takei ("Star Trek") and deals with the difficult subject of Japanese-American internment during World War II, will finally come to Broadway in the fall. The show was inspired by Takei's childhood.


'Hamilton' extends Off-Broadway through May

The new musical "Hamilton," now in previews at the Public Theater, has extended its Off-Broadway run for a third time. It will now close May 3, past the April 23 Tony deadline, which suggests commercial producers are not trying to move the production to Broadway this season. The show, created by and starring Lin-Manuel Miranda, officially opens at the Public Theater on Feb. 17.


First-ever BroadwayCon announced for next winter

BroadwayCon, a new convention designed for theater fans and fanatics, will be held at the Midtown Hilton next year on Jan. 22-24. Its offerings will include performances, panels, autograph sessions and meet-and-greets. Anthony Rapp, the original Mark in "Rent," is the event's co-creator.


Butler to play Hillary in 'Clinton' musical

Tony nominee Kerry Butler ("Xanadu," "Hairspray") will play Hillary Clinton in "Clinton the Musical," which starts its commercial Off-Broadway run at New World Stages on March 26. The musical premiered last year at the New York Musical Theatre Festival.


Lapine to direct revival of 1990s musical 'Falsettos'

"Falsettos," one of the finest musicals of the 1990s, and a landmark work exploring gay men and women in a family setting, will receive a Broadway revival next spring. James Lapine, who wrote its book, will direct the revival. It's quirky songs are by William Finn.


Tartaglia to do 'Buyer & Cellar' at George StreetJohn Tartaglia, best known for originating the role of Princeton in "Avenue Q" exactly a dozen years ago, will star in Jonathan Tolin's one-man comedy "Buyer & Cellar" at N.J.'s George Street Playhouse next month. Michael Urie played the role (of an out-of-work actor who gets a job working in Barbra Streisand's basement) during the show's successful Off-Broadway run.


Page goes from superhero villain to Disney villainPatrick Page, whose career has ranged from Shakespeare to big commercial musicals like "Spider-Man" (where he donned that Green Goblin costume), will now play the villainous Dom Claude Frollo in Disney's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," which will play N.J.'s Paper Mill Playhouse next month. As of this point, no New York run has been confirmed for the production.


'Last Five Years' to be released on VOD next week

The film version of the Jason Robert Brown two-character musical "The Last Five Years" with Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan, which will come to movie theaters on Feb. 13, will simultaneously be released on Video on Demand. The soundtrack also comes out next week.
