The Giants brass is down in Mobile, Alabama scouting at the Senior Bowl, but the focus for everyone remains on the futures of Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones. Both players are pending free agents and both had played well enough to earn new contracts in New York.

Speaking with reporters on Wednesday general manager Joe Schoen said that the Giants did have more talks with Saquon Barkley’s agent this week and they plan to continue the conversations next week. Barkley had looked as though he had returned to his rookie form this year, but his production did dip a tad during the second half of the season.

The Giants didn’t sound as committed to re-signing Barkley as they did with Jones during their end-of-the-year press conference last month. Down in Mobile, Schoen’s words hadn’t seemed to change much in regards to the running back.

“With any negotiation you try to move closer and that’s what we’ll try to do next week,” he said, according to Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News.

The Giants and Barkley’s representatives had talked during the bye week, but had reportedly been far apart at that point.

The New York GM also said that the Giants hadn’t started to discuss a new contract with Jones yet. Still, the organization’s desire to retain the former sixth overall pick in 2019 remained quite clear.

He told Leonard that “we want Daniel back.”

The Giants are coming off a surprise season that saw them reach the playoffs for the first time since 2016 and win their first postseason game since 2012. Jones and Barkley played a large role in the team’s success.

Jones threw for a career-best 3,205 yards this season and 15 touchdowns, which was the highest he’s had since throwing 24 his rookie season. His 67.2 completion rate was also a new best for him as well.

Barkley had a bounce-back year in which he recorded 295 carries for 1,312 yards and 10 touchdowns.
