Matchup

The NFL opens up 2023 with the Washington Commanders welcoming in the Cleveland Browns for some late-season inner-conference play. Washington is still very much in the playoff hunt as they simply need the following combination to clinch the seventh seed (according to ESPN): A win over Cleveland, a loss by Seattle and Detroit, and a loss or tie by the Green Bay Packers. It’s by no means a “sure thing” but with the team finding themselves in the driver’s seat of the race, they will certainly have every reason to play like their playoff lives depend on it; because they do.

Cleveland meanwhile has officially been eliminated from the postseason after last week’s loss to the New Orleans Saints. Despite the fact that they are no longer in the hunt, the Browns still have plenty to fight for; perhaps nothing more important than proving that their Franchise Quarterback — who they traded three first-round picks, a third-rounder, and two fourth-round selections for, then proceeded to sign to the largest contract in NFL history — can, in fact, still impact the game the way he once could.

Player Props

Curtis Samuel OVER 32.5 passing yards

Jahan Dotson has been the hot hand as of late when it comes to Washington receivers, but that time may be over with the return of Carson Wentz. Perhaps he has acclimated himself to his rising young wideout, but if last week was any indicator (hint: it was), Curtis Samuel is Wentz’s preferred target in the passing game. Three of Samuel’s five total catches came from Wentz despite him checking into the game with just over nine minutes left in the game, and before Wentz fractured his ring finger, this was the case as well.

Despite Cleveland’s impressive pass defense, expect Curtis Samuel to exceed Vegas’ expectations for him.

Deshaun Watson UNDER 215.5 passing yards

January 1st, 2023, will mark Deshaun Watson’s fifth game with the Cleveland Browns. So far, he has been underwhelming while leading the Browns to a 2-2 record. Watson was once viewed as one of the NFL’s top young quarterbacks. Now, he’s trying to prove that the ability he displayed with the Houston Texans is still there somewhere. Against the Commander’s secondary, though, this isn’t likely to happen.

Watson has averaged just 175.75 over his four games this season, and Washington does not present an easy task to him. Even with Kamren Curl listed as doubtful and Benjamin St-Juste listed as questionable, take the under on Watson passing yards.

Brian Robinson, ANYTIME TD

While the Cleveland Browns’ pass defense is among the top in the entire NFL, their run defense is among the worst. Over the past five weeks, the Browns still give up the 8th most yards to running backs per game. Over the season as a whole, they are the sixth worst.

With Antonio Gibson sidelined, Robinson is primed for a featured role in this office and will look to take advantage of every opportunity that will come his way.

Brian Robinson has not scored a touchdown in three weeks, sure, but he is undoubtedly due, and the Browns present a light challenge in accomplishing that.
